family life

The Children’s Village will consist of 25 homes, the homes being grouped together in clusters of 5 homes to form small communities within the village to create a greater sense of belonging; allowing families to share experiences and support one another.

This child care model is aimed solely at children who need long term care. It is not a transitional home thus only orphaned or abandoned children that require a permanent family environment will be offered a place within the village. Children grow within their family unit until they leave for tertiary education reasons or to lead other independent lives, however even then they will maintain emotional ties with their housemother, brothers and sisters.

The family unit will be lead by a foster mother (housemother) and consists of no more than 6 children ensuring highly individualized care. Children of varying ages will be grouped together to make up a family unit to emulate as normal a family as possible.

The house mother will take responsibility for her family. Her role is to create a nurturing, loving family and ensure the continual impartation of Christian values. Her responsibilities include guiding the development of the children and ensuring that key physical, spiritual and emotional needs are met. Each housemother will be trained to effectively care for children who come from a compromised health and social background in order to restore their dignity and value for life.

All children will be taught to undertake responsibilities within the home environment. Routine and structure will help to teach the children daily life skills, coping strategies, decision making and relational principles. The focus is to establish a secure and nurturing environment that will give the child the liberty to develop their own character while establishing essential boundaries.

Each home will be approximately 100m2 with an open plan kitchen, lounge and eating area; and will include a separate bedroom & bathroom for girls and boys and a bedroom for the housemother. The family unit is foundational in meeting the child’s basic needs in a loving and nurturing environment, instilling a sense of security and belonging from their early years to independent adulthood.

A support team, including a Village Director, social worker and counselors will ensure that the housemother receives the guidance and professional input that she requires. Housemothers will be aided by permanent relief workers who will assist during leave and days off. All relief workers will go through the same formal training process as the house mothers to ensure that they are adequately equipped for the tasks required of them.

A Village Director will oversee the daily running of the homes; providing a spiritual, emotional and administrative support system for the housemothers. He will play an active role in the lives of the children providing the necessary fatherly role and mentorship in the village. He will have the responsibility of overseeing all disciplinary measures, ensuring that each child is lovingly disciplined according to biblical principles and within clearly defined guidelines and parameters. He will also ensure that the daily needs of the household are met through the provision of food, toiletries, clothing and other household goods.

All staff will be trained and mentored to operate in love, humility, service and grace in order to better equip them to effectively raise the children in their care. In everything, we acknowledge the great love of God that is toward us. As we freely receive His love so we will be able to freely give of His love to others.

We acknowledge that in order to raise healthy, happy, secure children, it is essential that their lives are based on solid Christian foundations. The village is a place where Christian values form the basis for the development of community members, staff and children. The establishment of Godly principles within each home falls under the responsibility of the housemother, supported closely by the Village Director. The housemother has the freedom to decide how to incorporate activities such as daily devotions, prayer time, individual mentorship and church involvement into the flow of her family life. As active role models both the mother and the Village Director will impart Godly morals and Christian values through close personal interaction on a daily basis.

The village is part of a larger community and therefore it is important that the location, design and every other aspect reflect that of the surrounding community. In order for the village to fulfill its mandate of transformation and upliftment, it is essential to encourage participation from the surrounding community. The local community will have access to schooling and use of the facilities and will be invited to become members of the church. Education regarding HIV/AIDS, abuse and poverty will encourage the community’s acceptance of those who have been orphaned and affected by these issues.

Restoration of Hope, the umbrella organization for Ingane Yami, was birthed from the heart of Roger & Yvonne Grieg, the lead pastors at Kloof Harvest Church. As an organization, ROH shares the spiritual vision of Kloof Harvest: "changing lives, changing the world through the transforming power of Jesus Christ". Constant prayer and worship from the members of Kloof Harvest will form part of corporate governance and management.

We acknowledge that by our “fruit” we will be known as followers of Jesus Christ. We believe that to change the world starts with changing our own lives so that we reflect Christ’s glory in our daily walk. As we fulfill our role to reflect His Glory, we truly believe the world can and will be changed.
